Key Benefits of the 870 Visa

The 870 Visa provides several advantages:

Extended Stay

Choose from a 3-year or 5-year visa duration, with the possibility of renewing for up to 10 years in total.

Unlike other parent visas, the 870 does not require applicants to meet the balance of family test.

A flexible option for parents who intend to stay in Australia for extended periods without the need for permanent residency.

This visa removes the financial burden of an Assurance of Support requirement, making it a more accessible option.

This visa is ideal for parents who may not qualify for contributory or aged parent visas due to age restrictions or family balance requirements.

Two-Step Application Process

The application process for the 870 Visa is divided into two essential steps:

1. Parent Sponsorship Approval

Before lodging the visa application, the sponsoring child (or eligible family member) must first apply for approval as a Parent Sponsor. To be eligible, the sponsor must meet the income test, showing a taxable income of at least AUD 83,454.80 for the most recent financial year. If needed, the sponsor can combine income with a partner or another child who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, provided the sponsor’s share is at least 50% of the combined income. Once the sponsorship is approved, the sponsor is responsible for meeting conditions such as not sponsoring more than two people on an 870 Visa at any time.

Within six months of sponsorship approval, the parent can lodge the 870 Visa application. If the applicant wishes to apply from within Australia, they must provide compelling reasons for doing so during the sponsorship application. If the Department approves onshore application eligibility, the visa must be lodged within 60 days after the sponsorship is approved.
