Are you a retail manager whose employer is willing to sponsor you, but has asked you to find a migration agent? Whether you manage a supermarket, IGA store, petrol station, convenience store or another retail business, the first step is to assess the position and your eligibility together.
Retail Manager (General), ANZSCO 142111, is included on the occupation lists for the 482 Core Skills stream and the 494 Employer Sponsored stream. A suitable employer may therefore be able to nominate a genuine retail management position, provided the business, role and applicant satisfy the applicable requirements.
Sleek Migration assists retail businesses and workers across Australia with occupation assessment, employer sponsorship, nominations and visa applications.
What is a Retail Manager under ANZSCO?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics ANZSCO description for Retail Manager (General) states:
> Organises and controls the operations of a retail trading establishment.
The occupation code is 142111. Retail Store Manager and Shop Manager are alternative titles, and the occupation is classified at ANZSCO Skill Level 2.
Relevant work involves responsibility for the operation of the retail business. It can include deciding stock requirements, managing expenditure, reviewing sales, overseeing staff and implementing purchasing or promotional arrangements. The proposed duties must reflect the authority the person genuinely has.
An employee who mainly serves customers, operates a cash register or supervises a single shift may have a different role, even if their title includes the word “manager”.
Which retail businesses may be able to sponsor a manager?
A range of retail operations may have a position suitable for assessment. The business’s trading name alone does not determine eligibility.
| Business setting | Matters to examine in the proposed manager’s role |
|---|---|
| Supermarkets and IGA stores | Store performance, staffing, inventory, purchasing and reporting responsibilities |
| Independent grocery stores | Product range, supplier arrangements, expenditure and team management |
| Petrol stations and service stations | Fuel retail and shop operations, staffing, financial controls and site responsibilities |
| Convenience stores | Store operations, stock control, sales performance and workforce coordination |
| Specialist shops and retail bakeries | The person’s management scope within the actual retail operation |
| Quick service and takeaway outlets | Genuine outlet management and the relevant occupation classification |
Each business must establish its own eligibility. The presence of a particular brand or business type in this article does not mean every outlet is an approved sponsor or offers sponsorship.
Supermarket manager and IGA sponsorship
A supermarket may need an experienced manager to coordinate employees, control stock, monitor trading performance and oversee daily operations. These responsibilities should be explained through the actual position and business records.
For an IGA store, identify the employing entity, workplace location and reporting structure. The application needs to show how the proposed manager works with the business owner, department managers and other employees.
For example, consider a hypothetical supermarket manager who reviews sales and margins, manages staffing expenditure, oversees ordering and reports to the owner on performance. That is a different scope from a worker responsible only for checkout supervision.
A department management position requires its own assessment. Its seniority, commercial responsibilities and place in the organisation need to be clear. It should not automatically be treated as management of the entire supermarket.
If you are searching for IGA manager sponsorship or supermarket manager visa sponsorship, start by confirming that the specific operating employer is willing to discuss the process.
Petrol station and service station manager sponsorship
A petrol station may combine fuel retail, convenience shopping, food sales and other services. The occupation assessment should identify which parts of that operation the manager controls.
Relevant questions include who manages employees, who monitors financial performance, who approves purchasing and expenditure, and who is responsible for stock and operating procedures.
A hypothetical site manager responsible for staff recruitment, shop inventory, cash controls and regular business reporting may have a different role from a cashier who opens and closes the premises.
People also search for “gas station sponsorship Australia”. In Australian business records, the operation is commonly described as a petrol station or service station. Whatever terminology is used, sponsorship depends on the genuine position and the applicant’s eligibility.
Where a site includes a workshop, café or takeaway outlet, explain the different activities, employing entities and reporting lines. This helps establish exactly what the nominated manager will do.
Convenience stores and other retail shops
Long trading hours, multiple shifts and a broad product range can create management demands. However, opening hours alone do not establish a skilled managerial position.
An independent grocery shop or convenience store should explain the proposed manager’s recurring responsibilities. Useful examples might include reviewing stock losses, planning workforce coverage, supervising training and monitoring expenditure against budgets.
If the owner retains particular decisions, describe that arrangement accurately. The application should explain the manager’s real authority within the business.
Can Retail Managers obtain a 482 visa?
Retail Manager (General) appears at item 41 of the current 482 Core Skills Occupation List in LIN 24/089. The instrument requires the proposed tasks to correspond to the nominated ANZSCO occupation.
A typical application involves the employer’s sponsorship approval, the nomination of the position and the worker’s visa application. These are separate matters with their own requirements.
For the 482 Core Skills stream, the applicant generally needs at least one year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field. Qualifying part time or casual work must be equivalent to at least 12 months of full time work. Home Affairs indicates that the experience should have been gained within the last five years and at the required skill level.
The applicant must also demonstrate the necessary skills and meet English, health, character and other relevant requirements. One year of general retail employment does not automatically establish one year of qualifying management experience.
What qualifications should a Retail Manager have?
ANZSCO identifies Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree level qualifications as its indicative educational standard. It also recognises that sufficient relevant experience may substitute for formal qualifications. Any visa or assessment requirements must be considered separately.
For VETASSESS Retail Manager assessment, relevant study includes business management and retail management. Hospitality management can be relevant when managing a fast food or quick service restaurant.
VETASSESS classifies the occupation in Group C. One pathway requires an AQF comparable Diploma or higher in a highly relevant field, plus one year of highly relevant employment after qualification, within the last five years, at 20 hours weekly or more. Other pathways have different qualification and employment combinations. The VETASSESS information sheet explains those alternatives and the supporting evidence.
A course title alone is insufficient. The qualification level, completed subjects, employment history and chosen migration pathway need review.
Do I need a VETASSESS skills assessment?
A skills assessment is not automatically mandatory for every Retail Manager 482 applicant. Its necessity depends on the applicable visa requirements and individual circumstances.
The 494 Employer Sponsored stream generally requires a suitable skills assessment unless an exemption applies. Other pathways, including permanent residence options, should also be checked separately.
Passing an assessment does not by itself establish visa eligibility or approval of the employer’s nominated position.
Retail Manager sponsorship through the 494 visa
Retail Manager (General) is included in the 494 occupations instrument, LIN 19/219. This can be relevant to a supermarket, petrol station or retail business in an eligible regional location.
The standard 494 Employer Sponsored stream generally requires at least three years of relevant experience, a suitable skills assessment, competent English and an applicant under 45, unless an applicable exemption changes the requirement. The regional position and nomination must also qualify.
The one year experience requirement discussed for the 482 visa should not be applied to a standard 494 application.
What salary must the employer offer?
The employer must assess the genuine market salary for the position and satisfy the applicable visa income threshold and employment obligations. An award classification alone does not prove the annual market salary rate.
The assessment should consider the duties, location, responsibilities, hours and appropriate comparisons. Where penalties, overtime or other entitlements apply, the employer must address them correctly.
Read the official Home Affairs salary requirements and our guide to determining the annual market salary rate. Thresholds change, so they must be checked for the relevant nomination date.
What evidence does the retail employer need?
The supporting evidence should explain the business’s operations, finances, workforce and need for the position. Depending on the application, useful records may include:
- ASIC and ABN information identifying the operating employer.
- Financial statements, BAS and payroll records.
- The lease and relevant franchise or operating arrangements.
- An organisational chart and employee information.
- A genuine position description and employment terms.
- Records supporting the proposed managerial responsibilities.
- Recruitment advertising and outcomes where required.
- Evidence supporting the proposed market salary.
Where labour market testing applies, the advertising must meet the relevant timing, content and evidence requirements.
For a franchise business, explain the controls imposed by the franchise system and the decisions delegated to the local manager. The documents should accurately describe that balance.
A brief note on Subway, Red Rooster and other food retail outlets
Fast Food Manager is a specialisation under Retail Manager (General). Genuine managers at Subway, Red Rooster, McDonald’s, KFC or independent kebab takeaways may therefore have a retail management role worth assessing.
The actual employer, service model, managerial authority and duties still need review. Brand recognition does not establish sponsorship eligibility or a current vacancy. A kebab takeaway may operate differently from a full service restaurant.
Retail Manager and Restaurant Manager: the important difference
Retail Manager (General), 142111, and Café or Restaurant Manager, 141111, are separate occupations. The latter is absent from the current 482 Core Skills list, although other pathways may be available. Both occupations appear on the 494 list.
The ANZSCO Café or Restaurant Manager classification concerns dining and catering operations and excludes fast food managers. Simply changing a title cannot establish the correct occupation; the genuine work and business setting must support it.
Can Retail Manager sponsorship lead to permanent residence?
A Retail Manager may have an employer sponsored permanent residence pathway, depending on the visa stream and individual circumstances. A 482 visa does not automatically become permanent residence after a particular period.
An assessment should consider the employer’s nomination, the worker’s age, English, employment history, qualifications and any skills assessment requirements. The relevant Employer Nomination Scheme visa options should be reviewed before making long term plans.
Frequently asked questions
My employer asked me to find a migration agent. What should I do?
Send your resume, qualifications, employment history, current visa details and the proposed job information. With appropriate instructions, we can also discuss the business requirements directly with your employer’s authorised representative.
Can a small retail business sponsor a manager?
Its circumstances need assessment. The business must substantiate the genuine position, its capacity to support the employment and the other applicable requirements.
Can an IGA store or petrol station sponsor someone for the first time?
A business can have its eligibility for the necessary approvals assessed even if it has not sponsored previously. Its actual operations and proposed employment remain central.
Is a Diploma of Business Management and one year of experience enough?
It may support a potential pathway, but qualification relevance, experience, duties and the selected visa requirements all need review. The requirements for a 482 visa, a VETASSESS assessment and a 494 visa are different.
Can a cashier or shift supervisor apply as a Retail Manager?
The actual duties need assessment. A managerial title alone does not demonstrate the required occupational scope or level of skill.
Who pays the sponsorship costs?
The employer must pay the costs it is legally responsible for and cannot transfer prohibited sponsorship and nomination expenses to the worker. The official cost of sponsoring guidance explains the distinction.
Does this article advertise retail sponsorship jobs?
No. Sleek Migration provides migration assistance. An employer must make its own recruitment decisions, and this article does not promise employment or sponsorship.
