Do you manage a Subway, Red Rooster, McDonald’s, KFC, Guzman y Gomez (GYG), kebab shop or another quick service food business? Has your employer agreed to discuss sponsorship and asked you to find a migration agent?
Depending on the actual business and your responsibilities, the relevant occupation may be Retail Manager (General), ANZSCO 142111. This occupation is available under the 482 Core Skills stream and the 494 Employer Sponsored stream, subject to the applicable requirements.
Your workplace may call you a Restaurant Manager, Store Manager or Outlet Manager. For migration purposes, the assessment looks at the genuine role and operating model, rather than relying on the title alone.
Can a restaurant manager be sponsored as a Retail Manager?
A genuine fast food or quick service restaurant manager may be suitable for assessment as Retail Manager (General). The Australian Bureau of Statistics ANZSCO classification identifies Fast Food Manager as a specialisation of this occupation.
The exact ANZSCO description of Retail Manager (General) is:
> Organises and controls the operations of a retail trading establishment.
VETASSESS Retail Manager guidance also recognises quick service and takeaway restaurant management within the occupation.
This is a potential pathway for a properly classified position. Changing the name of a different role does not establish eligibility.
Retail Manager vs Café or Restaurant Manager
Café or Restaurant Manager, ANZSCO 141111, concerns dining and catering operations. ANZSCO places fast food managers separately under Retail Manager (General).
This distinction matters because Retail Manager (General) appears on the current 482 Core Skills Occupation List, while Café or Restaurant Manager does not. Other options may exist for a genuine restaurant management role, including an eligible regional or agreement pathway.
VETASSESS guidance for Café or Restaurant Manager distinguishes dining establishments from fast food and quick service settings. The business model and duties should be assessed before choosing an occupation.
Subway manager sponsorship
An eligible business operating a Subway outlet may be able to nominate a genuine Retail Manager position. The employer must demonstrate its own eligibility and the applicant must meet the visa requirements.
A useful assessment examines responsibility for staffing expenditure, ordering, stock losses, team development, customer service and business performance. A role primarily preparing sandwiches or supervising one shift may have a different scope.
The Subway Australian careers page explains that its restaurants are franchisee owned and operated. The particular employing entity and outlet therefore need to be identified. One outlet’s sponsorship arrangements do not establish the position for every Subway business.
Red Rooster manager sponsorship
A Red Rooster Store Manager or Restaurant Manager may have duties appropriate for a Retail Manager assessment, depending on their genuine authority and responsibilities.
The supporting evidence should show what the person manages, which employees report to them and how they contribute to the outlet’s financial and operational performance. Franchise standards should be explained alongside the decisions delegated to the manager.
If the employee progressed from team member to shift supervisor and then manager, the employment documents should distinguish those periods accurately.
McDonald’s and KFC manager sponsorship
Managers working in McDonald’s or KFC outlets should begin with the particular employer, proposed position and workplace. A well known brand does not establish that an individual outlet is offering sponsorship.
An assessment should examine the difference between managing an outlet and supervising a service shift. Relevant questions include who controls staffing budgets, who recruits and trains employees, who reviews sales and expenditure, and who is accountable to the owner or area manager.
Where an outlet has several management levels, an accurate organisational chart helps explain the proposed nominee’s position.
GYG and other Mexican quick service businesses
If you manage a Guzman y Gomez (GYG), Zambrero or another Mexican quick service outlet, the same occupational principles apply. The assessment should examine the actual operation and management scope.
For example, a hypothetical outlet manager may review labour costs, monitor stock and wastage, coordinate staff development and report on performance. Those responsibilities would need evidence; the business’s cuisine or brand alone does not determine the occupation.
Similar questions can arise for managers at Hungry Jack’s, Oporto and other takeaway or quick service businesses. These examples do not indicate current vacancies or sponsorship commitments by the brands.
Can a kebab shop sponsor a manager?
A kebab takeaway may have a genuine Retail Manager position, depending on its operations, staffing and management structure.
Consider a hypothetical business with several trading shifts and a manager responsible for purchasing, staffing expenditure, recruitment and financial reporting. The nomination should explain those responsibilities and why the business needs the position.
A kebab takeaway and a full service restaurant serving similar food may operate differently. The occupation should follow the genuine service model and duties.
What about café manager sponsorship?
A café needs an individual assessment. A limited service food outlet with a genuine retail management role may warrant consideration under Retail Manager. A café providing full dining operations may fit Café or Restaurant Manager instead.
Calling a business a café, offering takeaway coffee or having limited seating does not automatically establish eligibility as a Retail Manager. The full operation and position must be examined.
Qualifications and experience for Retail Manager sponsorship
A relevant Diploma, Advanced Diploma or higher qualification may support the assessment. Business management and retail management are relevant fields to examine. Hospitality management can be relevant to managing a fast food or quick service restaurant.
For a VETASSESS assessment, one Group C pathway requires an AQF comparable Diploma or higher in a highly relevant field and one year of relevant employment after qualification, within the last five years, at 20 hours weekly or more. Other pathways have different requirements. Refer to the VETASSESS Retail Manager information sheet.
For the 482 Core Skills visa, applicants generally need at least one year of relevant experience in the nominated occupation or a related field. Qualifying part time or casual experience must equal at least 12 months of full time work. Home Affairs indicates that experience should be within the last five years and at the required skill level.
The 482 experience requirement is separate from any skills assessment criteria. A skills assessment is not automatically mandatory for every Retail Manager 482 applicant, and a qualification plus one year of employment does not guarantee eligibility.
Can regional employers use the 494 visa?
Retail Manager (General) is included in the 494 occupations instrument. The workplace must qualify as regional, and the position and applicant must satisfy the relevant requirements.
The standard 494 Employer Sponsored stream generally requires three years of relevant experience, a suitable skills assessment, competent English and an applicant under 45, unless an applicable exemption changes the requirement. Its experience criteria differ from the 482 criteria.
What must the employer demonstrate?
The employer needs to substantiate the business, its need for the managerial position and the proposed employment arrangements. Evidence may include financial statements, BAS, payroll, the premises lease, staffing information, an organisational chart and a genuine position description.
For franchise businesses, explain both the franchise controls and the manager’s actual authority. If prices are set centrally, the documents should say so rather than claim unrestricted pricing powers.
Where labour market testing applies, advertising must meet the relevant rules. The salary must satisfy the applicable Home Affairs salary requirements and employment obligations. See our annual market salary rate guide for further explanation.
Your employer said, “Find a migration agent.” What happens next?
Send your resume, qualifications, employment history, current visa expiry date and the proposed job details. Include the workplace location, proposed salary and employer’s authorised contact details with their agreement.
We can assess the occupation and applicant, discuss the business requirements with the employer and explain what evidence is needed. The next steps should be planned around the actual requirements and your visa circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Restaurant Manager job title be used for a Retail Manager nomination?
The title needs to be considered alongside the genuine duties and business setting. A quick service outlet manager may fit Retail Manager, but renaming a different role is insufficient.
Can a shift supervisor qualify?
The role needs assessment. Supervising a shift alone does not establish responsibility for managing the outlet at the required level.
Do Subway, Red Rooster, McDonald’s, KFC and GYG all offer sponsorship?
This article does not establish that. The specific employer must be willing and eligible, and the position and applicant must qualify.
Can my employer speak directly with Sleek Migration?
Yes. With appropriate instructions, we can discuss the proposed sponsorship with the employer’s authorised representative and explain the business evidence required.
Who pays the sponsorship costs?
The employer must pay the costs it is legally responsible for and cannot transfer prohibited sponsorship and nomination expenses to the worker. Refer to the official cost of sponsoring guidance.
